Night Creams: Use or Snooze?

It’s an often debated issue, are night creams necessary? Sometimes, it just feels as though the beauty industry is pushing yet another product into our bathroom drawers. After all, if the moisturizer we use during the day does an adequate job, why not slather it on at night and call it good?

There are two main types of night creams, those with active ingredients meant to help wrinkles, firming and lifting.  These products’ ingredients (such as glycolic acid, vitamin A or retinol) increase cell turnover while you sleep. These type of products shouldn’t generally be used during the day as you should not have any type of sun exposure. And in turn, while using this type of night cream, you absolutely must be wearing sunscreen during the day as well (and you should be, regardless).

The second type, is mainly for moisture. If you live in a particularly dry climate, your skin has a tendency to be dry or during the winter, this type of night cream is a must and can be worn every night or rotated every other night with an anti-aging cream.  This type of cream is more emollient and a bit thicker than your typical daytime moisturizer, so it boosts hydration while you sleep.  Those with dry skin have a tendency to look slightly older, so who wouldn’t want to wake up with moisturized supple skin?

Bottom line, if your daytime moisturizer is making the cut as a night moisturizer, then absolutely, keep with it! However, if you are looking to improve your texture, help minimize wrinkles, firm things up or just get some more moisture, then I would definitely recommend a separate night cream! It is enough reason for me to make a beeline to my bathroom nightly, wash off my makeup and get to slathering on my night cream and sleeping my way to a more vibrant, glowing face!
